An I-Love-You Jar — 365 Notes, One a Day for a Year

Three hundred and sixty-five hand-written notes — one reason, one memory, one quiet thing you've never said out loud — sealed in a jar to be opened one a day. For a partner you've been with long enough to mean it. About twelve evenings of writing, spread over a few weeks.
Materials
- A large wide-mouth glass jar with a cork or wooden lid, about 2 litres (half a gallon) or bigger — something that earns a spot on the dresser (fit-test it in step 1)
- 37 sheets of cream or natural letter-size paper, cut into 370 slips of 2 × 4 inches (365 plus 5 spare), with a paper trimmer or scissors and a ruler
- A fine-tipped black pen, plus one accent color for dates and names
- Natural twine and a small kraft tag for the lid, plus a small envelope for the dated notes
- A handwritten instruction card on heavier cardstock
The jar isn't the gift. Your handwriting, three hundred and sixty-five times, is.
Instructions
- 01
Cut, fold and fit-test the slips. Cut ten 2 × 4-inch slips from each letter-size sheet (two columns of five): 37 sheets give 370, so five are spare. Fold each one in thirds, then drop them all into the empty jar, still blank. They should sit loosely with room to pull one out; if not, get a bigger jar now. Keep them in a shoebox while you write.
- 02
Brainstorm in five buckets. Specific memories. Small things they do. Their quiet strengths. Inside jokes. Things you've never told them. Aim for about 80 per bucket (400 ideas); you'll trim to 365.
- 03
Write in batches, not in one sitting. About thirty notes an evening, so twelve or thirteen evenings for all 365. Specificity over poetry — the way you hum when you cook on Sundays lands harder than I love your kindness.
- 04
Set the dated ones aside. For your anniversary, their birthday, the day you met and any hard dates, write the date on the outside in the accent color and keep those slips in a small envelope beside the jar, not in it. They count toward the 365. The rest go in the jar undated — random draw is part of the gift.
- 05
Fill the jar and tag the lid. Loose, not packed — the jar should look full but the slips should pull out easily. Tie the kraft tag to the lid with twine: Open one a day. Any order. Begin today.
What to write inside
Open one a day. Any day, any order — just one. On a day that matches a note in the little envelope, open that one instead. When you find a note that hits, keep it on the fridge that week. When the jar's empty, save them. We'll know what year that was.

Pro Tips
- Set the deadline two weeks before you plan to give it. The last fifty notes are the hardest — buffer time means you don't paper-fill with weak ones.
- If you hit a wall, scroll your camera roll backwards by year. One photo will surface three notes; the next will surface five. Memory is sequential.
- Tell them up front there's no rule against re-reading. The best ones get pulled twice, three times — and the jar refills slowly with the keepers.
