An Interview Armor Kit — Cheat Cards and the Walk-In Fixes
Most interview gifts are mugs and quotes. This one earns its keep — cheat cards from the JD, a stain pen.

A small zip pouch packed with cheat cards built from the job description and the small fixes that save the walk-in — lint, stain, mints. For someone you care about the day before. About forty-five minutes to make.

Materials

  • 1 small zip pouch, about 8 × 5 in (pencil-case size), so the 3 × 5 cards lie flat beside the fixes
  • 9 blank index cards (3 × 5 in): six cheat cards, the mirror-check card, the post-interview card and your note; 1 mini binder ring and a hole punch
  • 1 fine-tipped pen and 1 black permanent marker
  • Walk-in fixes — 1 travel lint roller, 1 stain pen, 4 wrapped mints, 1 mini tissue pack, 2 safety pins, 2 bandages
  • 1 gift tag on a string, for the zip pull
  • Optional — a $10–25 coffee gift card for after
The cheat cards win the room. The stain pen saves the moment.

Instructions

  1. 01

Lay the pouch out empty. Place every item inside first — pen, carded ring, lint roller, stain pen, tissues, mints, safety pins, bandages. Cards flat against one side, the fixes beside them, until it zips shut without straining. A bulky kit doesn't get carried.

  2. 02

Pull six keywords from the job description. Tools, soft skills, outcomes — whatever the posting repeats. These become the spine of the cheat cards. The kit's job is to make their stories mirror what the interviewer is already looking for.

  3. 03

Write the six cheat cards on the ring. One per card, titled: 30-Second Intro, Top 3 Wins, STAR Story 1, STAR Story 2, Weakness → Pivot, Questions to Ask. Use bullets — never paragraphs. On the STAR cards write 1 line each of Situation and Task, 2–3 bullets of Action and 1 bullet of Result, with a number only if there's a real one. Use only stories and numbers they've told you; they check every card and fix anything that isn't quite right before the day.

  4. 04

Make the checklist card. On the first card of the ring: 5-Minute Mirror Check — wallet, ID, resume, address, arrival time. They can glance at it in the lobby. Punch all the cards and put them on the ring behind it, so the cheat cards open second, after the checklist.

  5. 05

Make the outside tag. On the gift tag: Interview Armor — [name] with one quieter line below. You've already done the work. Tie it to the zip pull. The pouch should look like a thing someone wants to carry, not a craft project.

What to write inside

For [their name] — the day before.

Inside, six cards I built from the job description and your stories. Check them and change anything I got wrong — they're yours. The rest is mints, a stain pen, and a lint roller, because the interview can't be about a coffee spill.

You've already done the work. This is just the armor.

Pro Tips

  • Pull six keywords directly from the job description and seed them into the cheat cards. If the posting says cross-functional and measurable outcomes, those words go into the STAR cards verbatim. The recipient's stories then mirror what the interviewer is already scanning for.
  • Pre-write the Situation and Task in 1–2 lines each, but leave Action and Result as flexible bullets. Locked-down scripts read as memorized. Bullets let them adapt the same story to three different questions without sounding rehearsed.
  • Use the Weakness → Pivot card for the predictable weakness — limited experience, gap year, switching industries — paired with a two-line pivot that turns it into a growth story with proof. This kills the rambling answer before nerves can produce it.
  • Stash a post-interview card too: send the thank-you note within four hours, jot three things that went well plus one to fix, set a follow-up date. The kit doesn't end when they walk out — the next move starts before they get to the car.
Confidence is rehearsed. Composure is packed.
