A First-Day Desk Caddy — Pep-Talk Cards and Pocket Fixes
The first day has enough to remember. The caddy holds the rest — pep talk on a ring, sanitizer in reach.

A painted tin can, packed with the small-but-useful: a ring of hand-written pep-talk cards, a cork panel for sticky notes, and a pouch of pocket fixes that saves a first day. Forty-five minutes to make, plus drying time for the paint. Sized for any desk, any first day — new job, new school, new chapter.

Materials

  • The vessel: one clean 28 oz food can (about 4 in across and 4¾ in tall), opened with a smooth-edge can opener so the rim isn't sharp
  • The finish: multi-surface acrylic paint (one that lists metal on the label) in two colors, painter's tape, a small foam brush
  • The Today Panel: a 2 × 4 in piece of thin adhesive cork or felt, scissors, and a hot-glue gun
  • The card ring: ten 3 × 5 in index cards, a hole punch, one 1-in binder ring, a fine-tip black marker
  • The desk pack: a 3 × 5 notepad, sticky notes, two gel pens, one highlighter
  • Pocket fixes: a travel-size sanitizer for the can; mints, bandages, stain-remover wipes, a mini lint roller and tissues in a small zip pouch that sits beside it
  • Optional: a 2 × 3 in photo of you two, or a small USB drive pre-loaded with a first-week checklist
The pep-talk cards do the real work. Everything else just holds the desk together.

Instructions

  1. 01

Prep and paint the vessel. Peel off the label, wash and dry the can, and run a cloth around the rim to check nothing catches. Brush on one base coat and let it dry for the time on the paint's label. Tape a stripe or a clean color block, paint the second color, and pull the tape while the paint is still slightly tacky for crisp edges. Let it dry fully before the next step.

  2. 02

Letter the front. With a fine-tip marker or paint pen, write FIRST DAY KIT on one side and their name (or the nickname only you use) on the other. Add a small icon that's theirs — a controller, a stethoscope, a basketball, a coffee cup. Let the ink dry.

  3. 03

Glue on the Today Panel. Cut the cork or felt to about 2 × 4 in. Peel the backing and press it around the side of the can, smoothing it to the curve, with a dot of hot glue at each corner. This is where they'll stick the day's reminders — meeting at 11, coffee with Marcus, don't forget the badge.

  4. 04

Write the pep-talk card ring. One short, specific card per index card. Examples that work: "First meeting — breathe, ask one good question, you win." "Blank on a name? Try 'Remind me how you spell that?' — smooth every time." "At 3:00 p.m. the energy dips. Walk to the water cooler." Punch the corners, thread them on the binder ring. Make the last card the one in the card script below.

  5. 05

Pack the pocket fixes. Notepad and sticky notes upright in the center. Pens, highlighter and the travel sanitizer along the inside. Mints, bandages, wipes, lint roller and tissues go in the zip pouch beside the can. Clip the card ring over the rim, tape the photo or USB inside where they'll spot it later.

What to write inside

First day, last card on the ring:

Text me after lunch — I want the play-by-play.

Whatever happens at 9:00 a.m. doesn't get to decide what 5:00 p.m. looks like. You've got this. Call me on the drive home.

Pro Tips

  • Match the kit to their actual day. Meetings-heavy first day? Lean pens, highlighter, mints. On their feet all day? Swap in blister pads, deodorant, and an extra water bottle.
  • Write the cards in your voice, not a motivational-poster voice. A reference to that one interview they bombed and still got the call back lands a hundred times harder than believe in yourself.
  • Pre-load a USB if their job is laptop-bound: a one-page first-week checklist, a copy of their résumé, an empty Wins doc they can add to each day. The empty Wins doc is the move.
  • Don't seal it shut. The caddy works because they keep using it — refill the pocket fixes, swap in new cards on hard weeks, leave the Today Panel ready for tomorrow.
The kit is practical. The card ring is the gift.
