A First-Night Move-In Box — Toilet Paper and the Things You Forgot
The boxes are still in the truck. They need toilet paper, a charger, and a working light tonight.

A small lidded bin of the things they actually need on a first night in a new place — before the boxes get opened. Built for anyone you care about who's moving: a partner, a friend, a sibling, an adult child. Forty-five minutes to pack once you've bought everything.

Materials

  • A sturdy lidded storage bin, about 16 × 11 × 7 in, so a paper towel roll fits lying flat (a shoebox is too small); label the lid: OPEN BEFORE YOU UNPACK
  • A toilet paper roll, a roll of paper towels, and a travel-size hand soap
  • A phone charger that fits their phone + a small power strip (3–6 outlets), both with the plug type used where they're moving
  • Two LED light bulbs in the fitting their new place uses (ask, or check the listing photos) + one plug-in night light
  • A basic kit: scissors, a Phillips screwdriver, packing tape, a marker, ten sticky notes
  • A snack-and-drink bundle: two granola bars, a small bottle of water, instant coffee or tea, electrolyte packets
  • A handwritten First Night card, plus a toothbrush, toothpaste, and ibuprofen in a small zip bag
The first night is about not running back out for batteries.

Instructions

  1. 01

Label the lid. On the top of the box, in marker: OPEN BEFORE YOU UNPACK. On the underside of the lid: The boxes can wait. Eat. Shower. Sleep. The label is the kit's instructions.

  2. 02

Pack the bathroom layer first. Toilet paper, paper towels, hand soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, ibuprofen. Lay the paper towel roll flat along one long side and fill around it. Do a test pack before moving day: if the lid won't close, swap the full roll for a small pack of paper towels. These are the things people forget to keep out of the moving truck — and the things they need within the first hour.

  3. 03

Add the power-and-light layer. Phone charger, power strip, light bulbs, night light. A new place often has missing or burned-out bulbs in at least one room. Solve that before dark.

  4. 04

Tuck in the tool-and-snack layer. Scissors and a screwdriver get the new furniture together. Sticky notes label which boxes can wait until tomorrow. The granola bars and electrolyte packets cover the meal they're not going to cook tonight.

  5. 05

Write the First Night card last. Keep it short — see What to write inside below. Place it on top so it's the first thing they see when they pop the lid.

What to write inside

For the first night.

The boxes can wait. Don't unpack anything tonight — just find a clean corner, eat a granola bar, charge your phone, and sleep. Tomorrow you'll know where to start.

I'm a text away if you can't find anything.

Pro Tips

  • Buy nothing fancy. The point isn't quality — it's being there at all. A drugstore-brand toothbrush they don't have to dig for beats a designer one in a sealed box.
  • Hand it over if you can: drop it at the new place on moving day, before the truck is unloaded. If they're moving far, ship it to arrive by moving day, but only to an address where someone can take it in (a front desk, a package room, or a person they've arranged), and text them where it is.
  • If they're moving with kids or pets, add one wildcard: a sleeve of crackers, a chew toy, a coloring book and two markers. The first night is hardest on the smallest member of the household.
  • Skip the candle. Most rentals have smoke or scent rules; a candle on night one is the kind of thoughtfulness that becomes a problem. The night light does the home feels softer now job without the risk.
Moving day isn't about the move. It's about getting through the first night without having to leave for a 7-Eleven.
