A Date Night Jar — 50 Ideas, Folded and Drawn Weekly
Stop deciding what to do every week. Let the jar decide for you.

Fifty hand-written date ideas, folded into slips, drawn one each week. Built for couples in any phase — newly together, ten years deep, post-kids, long-distance. Thirty minutes to make. Designed to be edited and refilled as life changes.

Materials

  • A jar, box, or sturdy tin — something that looks at home on a shelf
  • 50 popsicle sticks, wooden coins, or parchment slips (pick one)
  • Fine-tipped markers in 4–6 colors (one per category)
  • Ribbon, twine, or a printed label for the lid
  • A small rule card or tag
The jar isn't the gift. The ritual is.

Instructions

  1. 01

Pick the vessel. Whatever looks at home on a shelf. Decorate it, or don't.

  2. 02

Brainstorm 50 ideas. Color-code by category — stay-in, go-out, splurge, free. Use real specifics: taco truck on Mission Street, not eat tacos. Keep every splurge to one you can actually afford. If you're often apart, add a few you can do on a video call: the same film started at the same time, the same takeaway in both kitchens.

  3. 03

Write each idea on its own slip. One per stick, coin, or scroll. Fold or stack neatly.

  4. 04

Mix and fill. Drop them in random order. Avoid clumps. The randomness is half the gift.

  5. 05

Add the rule card to the lid. Keep it short: Pull one. If it doesn't fit this week's time, money or plans, put it back and pull again.

What to write inside

Pull one every Friday. The rule: whatever you draw, we do. If it doesn't fit this week (time, money, one of us away), it goes back in and we pull again. When the jar gets light, we refill it together. That's its own date.

Pro Tips

  • Include 5–10 deeply personal ideas — inside jokes, that one trail you kept meaning to do, the bakery in the next town. These are the ones that land hardest.
  • Resist the chore version. Anything that feels like a task — fold laundry together — kills the jar. Keep them optional, joyful, or quietly bonding.
  • The day matters less than the consistency. Friday night, Sunday morning, last Saturday of the month — whatever fits your life. Just stick to it.
The point isn't the jar. It's that you stop having the what do you want to do? conversation and start actually doing things together.
