Services to Help an Aging Parent or Grandparent Record Their Story
For the child or grandchild who knows there is a family story at risk of fading — and who senses that now is the time to help an aging parent or grandparent put it down. These services are chosen for their range: from gentle weekly prompts, to voice recordings for those who’d never type, to professional interviews and documentary films for families who want to capture a whole presence, not just memories. There are options for every comfort level and ambition, whether your loved one prefers a quiet conversation, a formal project, or simply digitizing the shoebox of old photos and home movies. Ask them first: they decide whether to be recorded, what stays private and who gets to hear it. Start with what would feel most natural for them, or what your own family is ready for. You don’t need to do it all at once; one is enough to begin.

The Picks

StoryWorth Memoir Subscription
The classic memoir gift. A question reaches the parent each week by email or text; they answer by writing, or by recording their voice over the phone, and the stories become a hardcover book. $69 for one black-and-white book, $99 for one full-color book; the $199 Unlimited plan renews at $99 a year until cancelled. The lowest-effort path for the parent who keeps saying "I should write this down."

Storii Voice-Memoir Gift Box
For the parent who won't sit at a keyboard. Storii phones them up to three times a week with a question (landlines work too); they talk for up to ten minutes, and each answer is recorded and transcribed, ready to download as an audiobook or print. The box holds a card with a 12-month activation code. $59.99 on sale when checked (list $119.99); ships to the US, Canada and the UK. They choose who can hear their recordings.

ScanCafe e-Gift Card
For the family whose stories are stuck in shoeboxes and old tapes. You choose the amount; they spend it on ScanCafe's scanning at its listed rates. As ScanCafe puts it, $100 covers about 208 photo scans, 3 video tapes or 294 movie-film scans, so pick an amount that fits the box. Anything beyond the card's value is charged to them, so check ScanCafe's pricing page together before they send it off.
StoryCorps Interview Gift
The non-commercial option, framed as a conversation rather than an interview. You print StoryCorps' free coupon promising 30 to 40 minutes of your time and attention, then record together with the free StoryCorps app or in a web browser. The recording is yours to keep. Uploading a copy to the StoryCorps Archive, which also goes to the Library of Congress, is a separate choice they can say no to, and they can skip any question or stop. For the parent who says "I'm not interesting enough for a book" but will sit for a Sunday afternoon talk with a grandchild.

AncestryProGenealogists research project
The best-known name in professional genealogy. A researcher takes the parent's known names, dates and stories and works backwards through census pages, ship manifests and county records. Projects are priced after a free estimate call, so ask for the estimate before you promise anything; a one-off session explaining their DNA results is $149.

Legacy Tree Genealogists Research Project
For the family ready to commission a serious research project, especially abroad: Irish parish records, Eastern European emigration, Scandinavian church books, the trails mainstream databases can't quite reach. Each project starts with a free quote.

Legacy Interviews Full-Day Recording
A trained host draws out their life story on camera, with relaxed, guided questions. Two ways: a full day in the St. Louis studio with founder Vance Crowe, or online from anywhere over video call, as one session or a three-session full day. Prices come after a free discovery call. For the family who wants the parent's actual face and voice on record, not just a typed book.

Origin Stories Oral History & Memoir (New Zealand)
For a parent in New Zealand, and the family that wants both the recordings and a finished book without asking a relative to write it. Journalist and oral historian Emily Anderson's team records at their home. Silver (one 2 to 3 hour audio interview) is NZ$1,900 to NZ$2,200; Gold (8 to 12 hours over 2 or 3 sessions) is NZ$2,500 to NZ$2,750; a 60-page photo and story book adds NZ$7,500 to NZ$8,500. Prices exclude GST. They travel anywhere in New Zealand; online interviews are a last resort.

Legacy Life Project Family Film
The most ambitious gift on this list: a film of about ninety minutes, made from a guided conversation filmed at their home, plus a cloth-bound hardcover book written from it. $4,500 for one day of filming (one person or a couple, same price); each extra day is $3,400, and travel beyond their local area is quoted with the film. For a milestone moment, an 80th or a 50th anniversary, when several adult children chip in for one production. The film is shared only with the family's permission.
