Wilderness First Aid & Outdoor Skills Courses for a Friend Going Deep
For the friend, sibling, or partner whose love for the outdoors has outpaced the casual: the one planning routes further from rescue, who wants to be ready should something go wrong. This set is for those who know that true adventure carries real risk, and that competence matters more than gear — courses chosen for their seriousness, depth, and the way they let someone learn from experience instead of just reading about it. Whether it’s first aid for the remotest places, the step from trails to glaciers, or a paddling skill that might one day save a life, each pick reflects a commitment to returning home safely. Start with the course that matches their ambitions and where they are now, and agree the dates with them before you book: most run on fixed days, and some have prerequisites. You don’t need to send more than one.

The Picks
Wilderness Medical Associates International — Wilderness First Responder
The industry's other gold-standard WFR cert — WMA trains 10,000+ students a year across the US, UK, Canada, and abroad. Course list at wildmed.com/find-a-course; pick the session with them, then register. For the friend serious enough to want letters after their name in the trailhead first-aid kit.
NOLS Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
The WFR — the cert outdoor educators, trip leaders, and serious backcountry travelers carry. Nine or ten days in person, or a hybrid version: about 30–40 hours online first, then 5 in-person days. Either way there's an in-person part. Tuition varies by location ($745 to $1,350). Pick a session with them before you register them.
REI Outdoor School — Skills Classes & Trips
The lowest-barrier entry into outdoor skills in the US — REI runs classes and workshops on navigation, paddling, climbing, and backpacking basics at many stores and local sites. Prices depend on the class and place, from free events to paid workshops with lower member prices. NOTE: REI gift cards specifically do not cover class fees — book the class itself.
American Red Cross Wilderness & Remote First Aid
About 16 hours over a weekend, taught by Red Cross-authorized providers who set their own prices. Students must be at least 14 and already hold a current adult CPR/AED certification, so check theirs first. The gateway wilderness-first-aid cert before someone commits to a full WFR.
American Alpine Institute — Alpinism 1: Introduction to Mountaineering
For the friend who watched a climbing film and quietly started looking at ice axes. AAI's Alpinism 1 is the canonical week-long step from gym climber to actual mountaineer — six days on glaciers, ending with a Mount Baker summit attempt. The booking IS the gift.

Canada West Mountain School — Intro Wilderness First Aid (2 days)
A long-running BC mountain school with one instructor team for climbing, mountaineering, avalanche and wilderness first aid. Start with the two-day intro wilderness first aid course in West Vancouver (CA$295); the recipient can come back for the next one.

Mountain Skills Academy — Wilderness Advanced First Aid (40 hours)
A step up from a weekend first aid course: 40 hours, with 20 hours online first and then two and a half days of hands-on training in Squamish, BC, in spring and fall. From CA$595. For the friend whose outings already last longer than weekends.

Madawaska Kanu Centre — Canoe & Kayak Instruction
The Ontario paddling school on the Madawaska: a weekend whitewater canoe or kayak clinic for beginners and up, CA$500 for instruction, with lodging, meals and boat rental extra and 13% tax on top. They also run women's weeks and swiftwater rescue courses. For the friend whose outdoor competence is going river-shaped.

5 Star Training & Consulting — Wilderness First Aid & Outdoor Skills
A nationally accredited wilderness first aid course (SISSS00140) run in Katoomba in the Blue Mountains: the full beginners course is A$745, with cheaper recertification for those already qualified. For the AU friend doing serious expedition-style trips.
Survive First Aid — Wilderness First Aid (Australia)
Wilderness first aid built for the Australian bush, taught by paramedics: four days of hands-on scenarios after online pre-course modules, in Victoria and South Australia. A$795. For the friend whose outings are increasingly off-track.
Wilderness Medical Training — Far From Help (UK)
Expedition first aid taught by doctors, for 30 years: Far From Help is two days in Kendal, Cumbria, for people heading somewhere remote where the help is them. £380 including VAT, or a £215 deposit to hold the place.
